History: Samuel was a smart kid ever since the day he was put into elementary school. He learned how to read at the age of three and excelled greatly among other kids academically. By the time he was 11, he was smart enough to rival the IQ of the average college student. To the surprise of everyone, he chose to pursue his interest in the game of Duel Monsters instead of his overachieved intelligence. For two years, he assembled the cards he needed for a deck of his own design, a deck that he formulated with the best of his skill. Finally, after his thirteenth birthday, he entered the Duelist Academy entrance exams. Scoring perfectly on the written exam and ending his field duel in but a single turn, he immediately was granted entry into the academy. After two years at the academy, he ascended rapidly to Obelisk Blue rank, a feat that most other students took years to do.
There is more to Samuel that he lets on, however. What he rarely tells anyone is that his family (mother, father, grandfather, and sister) owns a card shop in Domino City called the 'Spirit Caller'. While it seems that the shop is your standard card shop with an interestingly high number of rare cards available here, the true and secret duty of the owners of the shop is to help duelists unite with their destined duel spirit(s). Ever since the invention of duel monsters and the first sightings of duel spirits, this has been the sacred and secret duty of the Wood family. Thus, each member of the family has a highened awareness for duel spirits and can even sense strange disturbances among the spirit community. They also have another duty past helping duelists meet their ally duel spirits; they also are in charge of helping protect the world from evil duel spirits by either destroying them or awakening the light in a spirit's heart and thus purging the spirit. Since the members of this family work so hard to call to the light in every spirit's heart and attempt to help them help the world, they are also nicknamed the 'Spirit Callers' by those who are aware of their services to this world, a term that later inspired the name of their card shop. Samuel is currently the youngest 'official' spirit caller, where as his younger sister is not yet qualified to be deemed a spirit caller.
